As if we needed any reminder of the devastating impact of natural disasters, the recent landfall of Hurricane Florence has displaced thousands in North and South Carolina. Experts have calculated it to be one of the top 10 costliest US hurricanes on record.

According to a Federal Reserve System report, wildfires, floods and volcanic eruptions caused over $306 billion in damages in 2017. Small businesses didn't escape unharmed either: 61% of small businesses in disaster areas lost revenue up to $25,000, and another 35% lost revenue over $25,000.

You may have heard the word "toxic" applied to a lot of things in the past few years - friendships, relationships, individuals - but have you thought of it being applied to a workplace?

Toxic workplaces are real, and they can have devastating effects on those who work in them. Arguing, undermining, and general animosity can wear on worker productivity and result in unfair (and sometimes even unsafe) power dynamics. Unsurprisingly, the 2017 Tech Leavers Study found that leaving unfair environments is one of the top reasons why women voluntarily quit their jobs.

But it doesn't have to come to that.

Every industry encounters changes, and the auto insurance field is facing some doozies. Greater reliance on ride-sharing systems like Uber and Lyft mean that many young people are losing interested in owning a car, and one day soon there could be a mix of driverless and semi-autonomous vehicles sharing roads with traditional drivers. New in-car diagnostics can read into driver behavior, and artificial intelligence (AI) is reducing the need for employees to do tedious tasks like data analysis.

Plus there's the fact that millennials - the soon-to-be-largest generation - are so tech-savvy that they are

demanding the ability to put together their own insurance packages and make changes whenever they feel like it through an online portal.

Making Social Media Safe for Kids

No matter your age, you probably remember your parents wondering what you and your friends talked about for hours on the phone every day. Today, there's no end to the things our children can tweet, post, and share on social media, and we're lucky if they spend only an hour or two doing so.

Social networking sites are more than just avenues for idle chatter, however. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media platforms offer opportunities to practice another language, trade photography tips, or make friends from cultures all over the world. Sure, there are opportunities for people to take advantage of

one another, but savvy parents can employ the following simple strategies to prepare their children for a safe

social media experience.

The world is rapidly adopting fiber internet for its great speed, reliability, and security. But for now, the US trails behind other developed countries in making the technology widely available.

CenturyLink is working to put the US on the map of lightning-fast internet by building a fiber-optic network across the country. Here's a quick look at what this option can mean for consumers and where it's already available.

What Is Fiber Internet?

Fiber internet harnesses the power of light to transmit data across long distances at speeds from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps. Far above DSL's speed range of 1 to 7 Mbps, fiber creates the capacity for smooth audio and video streaming, even for higher-resolution 4K video. Multiple devices can tap into the connection at once, even for high-demand activities, like gaming, without leading to a service slowdown.

You've probably heard of the Internet of Things (IoT)-that magical network comprising billions of connected devices that stretches across the world, providing data and insights that we only dreamed of just a few years ago. The total value originally placed on the Internet of Things was $8 trillion, spread across various aspects of business like logistics, employee productivity, and enhanced customer experience.

If your business isn't taking advantage of this resource, it's time to get on board. And if you've been making use of the lot and you're not seeing the results you expected, it's time to tweak your strategy. Read on to find out exactly how the loT can boost your company's productivity and efficiency.

Nevada is a state of jaw-dropping landscapes, dramatic weather, and a colorful history of cowboys and mobsters. So it's no surprise that the thirty-sixth state is the backdrop for countless movies and TV shows. In particular, gritty, glittery Las Vegas pops up in bit parts and starring roles in just about everything.

There's quite a range of entertainment options to choose from, but these ten TV shows and films show off the Silver State's charms.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has rolled in like a slow and steady wave since 1982. That's the year Carnegie Mellon University modified a Coke machine so programmers could get updates on the machine and see if cold drinks were available.

Today, the lot is booming. For example, Walmart uses radio frequency identification (RFID) sensors to determine top-selling items in its stores, while governments use the technology to solve chronic community problems. IoT- enabled home automation systems are becoming the norm, empowering homeowners to adjust lights, temperature, or security cameras from afar.

loT's future looks bright, too. Gartner reports that more than half of new business processes will use the lot by the year 2020.

Swapping weekend stories with work friends is a good investment in your social game. Then again, you might think twice when you hear the boss praising an
employee who spent that time finishing an amazing PowerPoint presentation — or when you learn that a

co-worker used their Twitter account to attract fifty new customers.

A serious case of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) can descend as you try to answer questions like:

  • When does being on social media cross the line between work and play?

Protecting your company's intellectual property rights is vital for your business. Copyrights, trademarks, and patents give you grounds to pursue legal action should anyone steal your innovations, but it is also imperative to prevent cyber intruders ahead of time by having digital security in place. A single cyber attack can eliminate your business's competitive edge and can cost you thousands of dollars to fight someone who uses your company's unique information without permission.

Below, we at Frontier have provided a few tips on helping protect intellectual property (IP) from hackers and other cyberthieves.
